Pre-Conference Sessions

The pre-conference sessions feature speakers Max Thompson, who will provide support to school administrators and lead teachers in designing a plan to create a “Literacy-Focused” school, and Chris Campbell and Dean Shatley, who will focus on legal issues pertaining to educators and students.

June 28, 2020 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm Hot Legal Topics for School-Based Administrators Focus: Employee Issues Taught by the school attorneys at Campbell Shatley, PLLC, this session will explore trends in school law and provide practical skills for veteran, new and aspiring school administrators on how to handle the most pressing legal issues of the day. This 3-hour session on Sunday afternoon will focus on employee issues. Participants will engage in interactive, legal learning with experienced school attorneys and will include time for Q&A. Pre-assignments will be required in order to receive the 5 hour credit. $75

June 29, 2020 8:30 am - 11:30 am Hot Legal Topics for School-Based Administrators Focus: Student Issues Taught by the school attorneys at Campbell Shatley, PLLC, this session will explore trends in school law and provide practical skills for veteran, new and aspiring school administrators on how to handle the most pressing legal issues of the day. This 3-hour session on Monday morning will focus on student issues. Participants will engage in interactive, legal learning with experienced school attorneys and will include time for Q&A. June 29, 2020 9:00 am - 11:30 am Max Thompson - Literacy Focused Schools Description: This session is intended to support school administrative leaders and teacher leaders as they design a plan for creating a “Literacy-Focused” school. It is based on research-based and evidence-based projects at over 3000 schools. All these schools are highly impacted by at least 85% of students of poverty and traditionally low expectations. Yet they all have reached over 80% of the students now passing state reading tests. The session will outline a model the schools used as well as in-depth details of their framework for literacy, and how they built and sustained achievement growth. Topics will include:
• Ensuring grade-level, standards-based assignments
• High yield instructional practices that target literacy
• A school-wide literacy support and accountability model
